Coordinator's Blog

This blog displays only selected content out of the Learnweb-course „Study Coordination Information Systems“. We strongly suggest all students to enroll for the aforementioned course on Learnweb in order to stay up-to-date regarding all study-related information issued by the Department of Information Systems.

Please enroll with your individual key to make sure that you get updates that are relevant to your progress in your studies. The key is created by prefixing "is" (without quotes) to the year in which you started the master's programme.
Example: Your first semester is/was the winter term of 2017/18. Then your individual enrolment key is "is2017" (without quotes).

Liebe Studierende,

Live Session on Effective Studying on 19.01.

Hey all,

as the exams are moving closer, I wanted to invite you to the next live session on effective studying on Monday, 19 January, 4 pm (c.t.) to 6 pm in Leo 18.

I envision the session to start with a quick recap of effective study methods at the beginning of the session, while the bigger part is spent with getting your hands dirty by applying the methods to the topics covered in your next exams.
As most of the study methods are simple—though not intuitive—this session should also be valuable for students new to this topic. Nevertheless, I would see the primary purpose of the session in the accountability it provides than the knowledge it conveys. Not the understanding of what to do, but the disciplined execution and making it a habit, is the main challenge. This session can be a stepping stone in your learning journey. It is suitable for students of all semesters and all studies (so although it is an offering by the Information Systems institute, feel free to bring your friends).

Here are some sources to get you started in the meantime:

  • LearnWeb course by me covering foundational topics (like illusions of knowing and desirable difficulties) and effective techniques (like retrieval, spacing, and variation). Available as slides and videos.
  • Book "Make it Stick: The Science of Successful Learning". Available online for free via ULB; quite easy read with lots of anecdotes and examples.
  • Video on active recall (aka. retrieval, THE study method you should definitely be doing) by Ali Abdaal (my first point of contact with the topic of effective studying)
  • Video on spaced repetition (aka. spacing) by Ali Abdaal

If you have any questions, please contact me personally at sligensa@uni-muenster.de.

I wish you a smooth start for the year 2026 and look forward to seeing you in two weeks!
Sven

Survey of Electives in Summer Term 2026

To plan elective courses in Summer term 2024, a preliminary survey is conducted.

If you are willing to  participate to a seminar or project seminar in Summer Term 2026 , please join this survey in the Learnweb:

https://www.uni-muenster.de/LearnWeb/learnweb2/mod/feedback/view.php?id=3901625

The survey is opened now and and will be closed on 2025/11/26 23.59.  An FAQ-Site describing the whole process is available here:

https://www.uni-muenster.de/LearnWeb/learnweb2/mod/page/view.php?id=1043934

An application phase will follow during the last two weeks of lecture time and will be announced separately in the Coordinator's Blog.

Especially,  we ask about your interest in a start-up project seminar, as announced by a separate  feed.

Note that participation in this survey is a neccessary condition. That means: if during application phase a larger number of applications shows up compared to the numbers given by this survey and, due to this underestimation of capacity there are too few places in offered seminars/project seminars,  then students with an application but without participation in the survey risk to be disregarded. On the other side during application phase, applications of students who have participated in this survey will usually be considered.

A word to Bachelor students who change to the Master-programm next semester (and might have the course IS-MSc-Coord, to see information concerning Master studies): Assignments to seminars and project seminars taking part in your first Master semester will not be possible in general. There are plenty of lectures intended, e.g. for the first semester, hence there is no need for a seminar/project seminar during your 1st Master semester.

Yours sincerely

Ingolf Terveer
