Science Communication in Digital Information Environments

Abstract: The talk provides an overview of current trends and research fields in science communication research and how science communication has changed in digital media environments. It will deal with the benefits for and challenges of science communication online and will outline the frameworks for analysis. Pressing questions of science communication in digital media environments such as worsening of science journalism, the pluralization of actors and audiences, fragmentation and polarization of science communication audiences as well as the role of mis- and disinformation and algorhitmization for science communication will be discussed.


Short bio: Julia Metag is Professor at the Department of Communication at the University of Muenster, Germany. Her research interests include science communication, political communication, and online communication. She is Co-PI of the Swiss Science Barometer survey (www.wissenschaftsbarometer.ch).
