Title: JiTT@OS2017: Why and how not to lecture

Abstract: JiTT@OperatingSystems was as project throughout summer term 2017 funded with a fellowship for innovation in digital university teaching by Stifterverband and Ministry of Innovation, Science and Research (NRW).  The project aimed to improve the teaching and learning situation throughout lectures on “Operating Systems” in the module “Computer Structures and Operating Systems” (compulsory module in Bachelor studies Wirtschaftsinformatik, 4th semester) by applying Just-in-Time Teaching (JiTT).

In this talk, I will argue that lectures are a waste of time, present JiTT as alternative approach, discuss project outcomes, and ask for your help.  Importantly, (a) evaluation results show that students liked JiTT a lot, and (b) I had more fun than in traditional lectures.  Student participation needs to be improved, though, which might be supported by broader adoption of JiTT (or related approaches such as flipped classroom) in other courses.

As side result, self-study course presentations have been created with newly developed Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) and published as Open Educational Resources (OER), all available on GitLab: https://gitlab.com/oer/OS

Bio: Jens Lechtenbörger obtained his Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Münster, Germany, where he is a tenured lecturer at the Chair for Computer Science in the Department of Information Systems.  His research interests include the creation of OER, database and data warehouse design, data integration, and technological and social impacts of internet and web.
