Abstract:

Although process mining can no longer be considered a really new research area, it still has many opportunities and challenges, as the solutions presented are still weak compared to real-world needs. Process mining can be defined as a research discipline between “machine learning and data mining” on the one hand and “process modeling and analysis” on the other hand. However, how much machine learning has actually been applied in process mining? What about computational intelligence techniques? Since both machine learning and computational intelligence have been widely applied in data mining in general, one might expect the same for process mining. In this talk, we will see a summary of the results of a mapping study on the area of process mining, conducted by our research group at the University of São Paulo.

Bio:

Marcelo Fantinato is an associate professor in the School of Arts, Sciences and Humanities at the University of São Paulo (USP), Brazil. PhD in Computer Science (2007) and Master of Engineering (2002) at the University of Campinas (Unicamp), Brazil. Bachelor in Computer Science (1999) at the State University of Maringá (UEM), Brazil. He has worked in industry as a software testing specialist at the CPqD Foundation, Brazil (2001 - 2006) and as a specialist in research and development at Motorola, Brazil (2006 - 2008). Currently, he is the head of the Master of Science Graduate Program in Information Systems at USP. He has a Green Belt certification with the Motorola Six Sigma program for process improvement. He was the program committee co-chair of the 4th Brazilian Workshop on Business Process Management (WBPM 2010), the general chair of the 2nd Brazilian Conference on Software: Theory and Practice (CBSoft 2011), the general chair of the 8th Brazilian Symposium of Information Systems (SBSI 2012), the program chair of the 6th Brazilian Symposium on Software Components, Architectures and Reuse (SBCARS 2012), the general co-chair of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd International Workshop on Reuse in Business Process Management (rBPM 2010, 2011 and 2012) and of the 4th and 5th International Workshop on Process Model Collections: Management and Reuse (PMC-MR 2013 and 2014), both together with BPM international conference (2010 to 2015). He worked on organizing activities for nine other scientific events. He acts as associate editor of the International Journal of Cooperative Information Systems since 2014 and is member of the editorial board of four other journals, two still active. His main research interests are business process management, service-oriented computing, project management and software engineering.
