Co-TraAIner? AI for Supporting Tactical Decisions in Professional Team Sports
Speaker: Prof. Dr. Oliver Müller
Abstract: The enormous progress made in artificial intelligence (AI) in recent years is changing how we work and live. And AI is not stopping at sports, either. Numerous professional clubs and associations are currently trialing where and how the use of AI makes sense for them. In his talk, Prof. Dr. Oliver Müller will discuss how AI is used in professional team sports to support tactical on-pitch decision-making. Specifically, he will dive into two examples from research in collaboration with top-flight football and handball teams. The first project applies large language models and event stream data to predict what will happen next on the pitch. The second project focuses on graph neural networks and sensor-based tracking data to predict the likelihood of scoring a goal within the next seconds.
Short Bio: Oliver Müller is a Professor of Management Information Systems and Data Analytics at Paderborn University. He holds a BSc, MSc, and Ph.D. in Information Systems from the University of Münster's School of Business and Economics. His research focuses on the question of how humans can make better decisions through the use of data and algorithms. This includes developing innovative machine learning-based systems to support human judgment and decision-making, as well as empirically studying the acceptance and value of data-driven decision-making in organizations. Oliver has proudly owned a season ticket for the Südtribüne in Dortmund for over 20 years.
