Digital Health Application for Personalized Rehabilitation after Ankle Inversion Trauma

Ankle injuries after inversion trauma are common and they can have serious consequences1. Physiotherapy is rarely prescribed, although studies report a 60% reduced risk of re-injury after balance training2,3. Patients demonstrate a broad variety of impairments in function and activity after ankle inversion trauma1,4. E-health solutions such as InjuryMap© and SWORD HEALTH offer more or less independent rehabilitation after ankle inversion trauma. Their first user experiences are positive, though adherence is low without health professional interaction, and personalisation is limited. The digital system in this study aims to provide personalized rehabilitation, which could help patients return to work or sport in an effective and efficient manner and reduce the risk of chronic disability.

SPP 1921: "Intentional Forgetting" in organisations: Forgetting confidently: Determinants and consequences of trustful usage of information systems in organizations

Continuously increasing and changing amounts of data in modern organizations demand new information handling strategies. Effective knowledge management requires a flexible selection of essential information, for example, for decision processes under uncertainty or in dynamic economic markets. In this regard, information systems can reduce decision maker's cognitive load, emotional strain, and stress. However, for those positive effects to occur, persons need to use the information systems trustfully in order to forget "confidently". The goal of the present research project is to model and empirically examine the psychological processes underlying trustful use of information systems, enabling intentional forgetting.

Reducing the moderation effort of user comments with the help of automation using text analytical methods (MODERAT!)

In recent years, a rapid increase in racist, political and religiously motivated hate commentary has led many newspaper editors to deactivate their online comment functions on their websites. While this is understandable from an economic point of view for the individual publishers, serious problems for the public discourse arise in view of restriction quotas of up to 50%. The MODERAT! project aims to use an integrative and interdisciplinary approach to develop software tools and a web platform that will enable operators to moderate web debates with significantly less effort. Comments are analyzed automatically, so that only a small number of critical comments have to be viewed manually. In this way, media houses and publishers should be able to offer web debates again on their own websites and thus enter into a more active exchange with the readership.

Algorithmization and Social Interaction

Imagine you call a company and your request is no longer answered by a human being but by an artificial assistant - how does this affect you as an individual and society at large? And does the customization of information in social media and online environments limit our horizon, or even keeps us in a ‚filter bubble‘? These are just a few of the socially and politically relevant core questions of the interdisciplinary topical program „Algorithmization and Social Interaction“. Scholars from information systems, economy, social sciences, law and communication studies work together to explore, first, how (artificially intelligent) algorithms can be used to influence social interaction. Second, the topical program is interested in how society (including the public as well as political and societal elites) reacts to this increasing algorithmic governance.

Less is sometimes more: Services and requirements for a no-stop shop

In a no-stop shop (NSS), public services are provided proactively without any activity from citizens. For a NSS, data of citizens is to be integrated so they do not have to apply for public services any longer. Instead, services are provided by public organizations without application. A shift to proactive service provision entails fundamental procedural changes and is therefore not comparable with standard digitalization decisions. For the realization of a NSS, both a customized instrument that supports public organizations in the selection of services for the NSS and a catalog of requirements for the concrete implementation of the NSS are necessary. The goals of this project are therefore 1. the creation of a catalog of requirements for a no-stop shop that takes into account and harmonizes both public organization and citizen interests (especially digital sovereignty) 2. development of a calculation method to support the decision-making process for the selection of services for the no-stop shop

Evaluation of the German Oline Access Act - Identification of data sources, data collection and data analysis

The aim of this project is to evaluate the municipal implementation of the online access law. On 18.08.2017, the Act on the Improvement of Online Access to Administrative Services (OZG for short) came into force, which stipulates that by 2022 the federal and state governments must also offer their administrative services electronically via so-called administrative portals. The federal, state and local authorities now have two more years to fulfil the requirements of the law and offer their administrative services completely electronically. The project now examines the status quo of the implementation of the OZG for municipal administrative services. A comprehensive survey of the implementation of the law at the municipal level will allow a detailed analysis of the development potential in the next two years. Based on the data and findings obtained, tailor-made recommendations for action for administration and politics can be derived, which will enable the timely implementation of the law.

Quo vadis, Civis? Development of a citizen journey for a demand-oriented service design in the public sector

Up to now, the public sector has taken a supply-oriented approach to the design of electronic services for citizens. Companies in the private sector, on the other hand, have been relying on demand-oriented service design for years. So-called 'customer journeys', which focus on improving the service experience of customers, are used to better understand the perception of services by customers and to tailor the use of online services to that perception. Especially against the background of the stagnating e-government usage rates in Germany, the necessity for a user-oriented design of public services is tremendous. In this project, we therefore examine the applicability of customer journeys to the public sector and develop a so-called e-Government Citizen Journey, which we evaluate for its applicability in practice.

Nationale E-Government-Strategien im europäischen Vergleich

Germany started digitisation comparatively late, which is why the focus is often on European partners who are already further advanced in this area. In many cases, the question of how Germany can learn from other countries has been, and still is, a central issue. The digitisation successes of the Scandinavian countries in particular appear to be groundbreaking in this respect, whereby the question arises as to how far the results can be transferred to German conditions there. In this project we critically analyse the transferability of e-government strategies as well as experiences in their implementation, especially in a direct comparison of Denmark and Germany.

SPP 1921: 'Intentional Forgetting' in organisations: 'Forgetting confidently': Motivational and emotional influences on intentional forgetting in organisations

The tandem project of the University of Münster with the disciplines Organisational & Business Psychology (Guido Hertel) and Information Systems (Jörg Becker) focuses on studies on motivational factors that can interfere or promote intentional forgetting in organizations. Intentional forgetting is operationalized by the extent of the utilization of information systems. Information systems are considered to be a structural form of intentional forgetting in organizations that provide users with relevant information so that less relevant information can fade into the background (gradual forgetting). In this way, the use of information systems can save resources and increase the quality and speed of decisions by focusing on the essential decision criteria.

Instance-Based Algorithm Selection of Inexact TSP solvers

The Travelling Salesperson Problem (TSP) is arguably the most prominent NP-hard combinatorial optimisation problem. Given a set of n cities and pairwise distances between those, the objective in the TSP is to find the shortest round-trip or tour through all cities, i.e., a sequence in which every city is visited exactly once, the start and end cities are identical, and the total length of the tour is minimal. The Euclidean TSP has important applications, e.g., in the fabrication of printed circuit boards as well as in transportation and logistics. We aim at constructing an instance-based algorithm selection model in order to improve the current state-of-the-art solver.

Towards EPC Standardization - Process Modelling with Event-driven Process Chains

Online Learning Modules for Business Process Management (BPM) Advanced Higher Education

Business Process Management (BPM) has evolved into an important topic at universities in Europe and abroad, and it has become an important part of modern management education both at the bachelor and master levels. At the same time, however, many practitioners are nowadays confronted with challenges related to BPM, even though BPM has not been part of their primary and secondary education. In addition, a technology-driven field such as BPM is subject to the rapid changes and innovations in information technology; so even managers who have graduated only recently have a permanent demand to update their knowledge and skillson a continuous, life-long basis. .Therefore, the goal of the BPM_Online project is to establish executive BPM education throughout Europe within a network of leading BPM research institutions.

End-Of-Life Solutions for eCar-Batteries – Development of Product-Service-Systems and Information Systems for Decision Support

An immature battery technology appears to be a crucial obstacle to impede a quick diffusion of electric mobility in Germany. One core factor are the high initial costs of traction batteries. To improve the total cost of ownership an electric vehicle, depleted batteries could be repurposed after their automotive use. Depending on the technical properties of a battery, different second-life scenarios can be realized (e.g., to propel smaller vehicles or to store green energy in stationary applications). The EOL-IS project's goal is the development of services (e.g., pay-per-use business models, engineering services, maintenance services, refurbishment) for the second-life of eCar batteries that can be offered with the battery as a product-service system. Based on the chemical and technical features of individual batteries, the battery's use history, and its condition, a custom-fit product-service system is configured in order to enable the re-use of the battery.

Life event based e-government using the example of the life situation "Child"

Although German municipalities offer similar services, their electronic implementations are often heterogeneous. Thus, citizens are confronted with many different websites which leads to a low adoption of e-government services. Creation of manuals for the target-oriented preparation of the study "E-Government-Competence"

The aim of this project was to prepare the results of the e-Competence study in a focused and targeted manner for a better communication to the respective target groups. The results will be practicioner-oriented manuals. 19 identified reference roles can help to structure the competence requirements of a public administration, to develop profiles for job advertisements or to generally prepare job profiles and to identify future needs. The guideline, on the other hand, helps to select appropriate forms of communication. The reference roles therefore can support the phases of recruiting and personnel development, while the route to selecting suitable didactical methods can support the stages of personnel development and, where appropriate, staff retention, the latter, for example, by allowing employees to specifically train them to gain competences for an advancement to acquire a better job.

Sustainable High Performance - the quest for balanced work practices

The proliferation of information and communication technology (ICT) has significantly transformed the way work is organized in many companies today. A highly differentiated and elaborated repertoire of collaboration tools affords employees and organizations with unprecedented leeway in deciding when, where, how, and with whom work is to be done. Finally, it seems, employees are empowered to fashion their own solution for their work-life balance. At the same time studies acknowledge that we live in demanding, sometimes over-demanding times. Extended freedom puts the onus on employees, teams, and managers to craft their work. Under these circumstances, delivering high performance and staying healthy over long periods of time is an impressive achievement. Our research aims at understanding how high performers succeed to maintain their level of performance and to balance demands and periods of rest.

eGovernment Competence

The project E-Government competence aims at identifying the future personnel requirements in the public sector and to develop teaching methods that help employees to better adjust to the changed environment and customer needs. Therefore, in a first step, today's and future roles incorporated by employees in the public sector are gathered on the basis of IT-supported administration processes. This should help to identify those (presumably) new competencies especially required when working in an "E-Government context". Then, competencies that are needed now and in the near future are derived from this analysis and suitable teaching methods are developed.

On the impact of collaboration tools - valuable resources or stressors?

Against the backdrop of current debates about new ways of working and technologically induced stress, we acknowledge the ambivalent effects of collaboration tools on their users: on the one hand they are enabling and facilitating distributed collaboration and knowledge sharing, on the other hand they add another layer of complexity to distributed project work and still too often fail. Therefore, we are exploring the link between the technology repertoires of employees engaged in multiple project teams and the level of stress.

Economic Impacts of Cybercrime

Some progress has been made in understanding and managing cybercrime as well assessing its economic impact. Yet much remains to be done. Lack of co-ordination in law enforcement and legislation, lack of common consensus on the nature of cybercrime and lack of knowledge sharing and trust are just some of the issues that both afflict cybercrime responses and cloud our understanding of cyber crime. E-CRIME addresses these well-known problems, while analysing the economic impact of cybercrime and developing concrete measures to manage risks and deter cybercriminals in non-ICT sectors. Secure adaptive Steganography

Adaptive steganography is a hiding technique to embed secret messages into covers by selecting the most secure embedding positions within a heterogeneous cover signal. Current adaptive techniques are designed without considering that differences in the detectability between different parts of a cover in fact leak side information to the detector. This enables a passive adversary to separate parts with presumably high embedding density from parts with presumably low embedding density, or to compare between both parts. This project for the first time combines signal processing and game theory to study distribution functions for embedding changes which anticipate such adversarial strategies.

8th International Conference on IT Security Incident Management & IT Forensics (IMF 2014)

IT security is an integral aspect in operating IT systems today. Yet, as even high-end precautionary measures cannot prevent every attack or security mishap, forensic capabilities in investigating such incidents in both technical and legal aspects are paramount. Capable incident response and forensic procedures have thus gained essential relevance in IT infrastructure operations and in law-enforcement, and there is ample need for research and standardization in this area. Since 2003, the IMF conference has established itself as one of the premier European venues for presenting research on IT security incident response and management and IT forensics. The conference provides a platform for experts from throughout the world to present and discuss recent technical and methodical advances in the field. It shall enable collaboration and exchange of ideas between industry (both as users and solution providers), academia, law-enforcement and other government bodies.

Collaborative process-oriented service productivity management

The Internet of Things (IoT) offers us more and more opportunities to connect different devices and exchange data. Accordingly, the number of IoT-enabled end devices such as smartphones, smartwatches or fitness trackers is increasing. Many of these devices have microcontrollers or sensors, such as cameras or motion sensors, with which they exchange data via cloud services using AI processes. However, both the devices themselves and the AI applications consume resources in the form of materials and energy. It is important to reduce this resource consumption - especially for IoT applications that are used in the environmental sector.

Game theoretical approach for the distribution of children to day-care facilities

The distribution of children to day-care facilities is a complex matching problem. Many cities solve the problem with a decentralized approach, where each day-care facility has its own wait-list. This process is often time-consuming and not optimized in view of parents’ preferences. We work in cooperation with the Leibniz Centre for European Economic Research on a market mechanism, which enables an automatic distribution, which considers the needs of both parents and day-care facilities.

E-Assessment Tool for UML class diagrams

The correction of student exercises for modelling UML class diagrams can be complex. Especially, when the exercise urges the students to use suitable design patterns, it can be difficult to compare two solutions with different design patterns. For this reason, we work on an E-Assessment tool, which is able to automatically identify design patterns within student solutions. The results can be leveraged to create customized feedback for students, which aims at the correct choice and application of design patterns.

Algorithmic Skeletons - The Muenster Skeleton Library (Muesli)

Experience shows that the development of parallel programs is an elaborate and time-consuming task. The Muenster Skeleton Library (Muesli) is a collection of high-level concepts that facilitate the development of parallel programs. The library contains so-called algorithmic skeletons, i.e. frequently recurring parallel programming patterns, which can be easily and efficiently combined to develop parallel applications.

Monitoring Changes in Big Satellite Data via Massively-Parallel Artificial Intelligence

The remote sensing field witnesses an explosion in the amount of available data, with petabytes of data being gathered by single satellites every year. Such data allow the identification of fine details in the landscape and the recent breakthroughs in artificial intelligence (AI) facilitate application areas such as agricultural monitoring, infrastructure management, mapping forest development, and many others. Applying AI models on a global scale can become extremely time-consuming with analyses potentially taking weeks, months, or even years. This project aims at the development of highly-efficient parallel implementations for AI methods that allow to detect and monitor “changes” visible in time series satellite data. Collaboration with the University of Copenhagen (Cosmin Oancea and Marcos Vaz Sallies). Supported by the Independent Research Fund Denmark (DFF).

DeepCrop: Quantification of Carbon Stocks via Deep Learning

Recent technological developments in deep learning and drone-borne Lidar scanners pave the way for constraining the uncertainty inherent to quantify and project ecosystems' carbon (C) stocks. With a rising demand for biomass, DeepCrop aims to precisely measure above ground biomass and to estimate C sinks in croplands and forests. The ambition is to bridge expertise of experimental and computer scientists to develop novel tools for the automated processing of Lidar data utilizing deep learning and drones. Joint work with the University of Copenhagen (Katerina Trepekli, Thomas Friborg, Christian Igel). This project is, in part, supported by the Villum Foundation and the Data+ program of the University of Copenhagen.

Uncovering leadership styles performed in Open Source Software Communities

Open source software (OSS) communities have a distinct way of organising of dispersed individuals and mobilize these individuals for producing the software products. The success of these communities is dependent on the presence and contribution of the participating volunteer individuals in the community. The leaders of the OSS community are the key members in keeping the contributing developers together, facilitating collaboration, and sustaining communities. Therefore, firstly we aim to enhance the understanding of OSS leadership by developing an integrative framework. This framework aims to consolidate all the attributes or cues associated with OSS leaders and provide a coherence understanding of OSS leadership. Secondly, the research endeavors to methodologically operationalize this framework of OSS leadership and shed light on real OSS leadership practices. Finally, the research further aims to provide granular insights on the actual performance of the specific OSS leader.

Musket - Muenster Skeleton Tool for High-Performance Code Generation

Many existing approaches to high-level parallel programming provide parallel constructs in the form of a library. This causes some limitations such as the difficulty to implement optimizations and a higher entry barrier for inexperienced programmers. Thus, Musket is based on a DSL. Important design decisions such as the syntax and structure of code can be selected purposefully when building a DSL. To abstract from low-level details, algorithmic skeletons (skeletons for short) are used. In essence, skeletons are higher order functions and encapsulate typical parallel computation/communication patterns.

Creation of and collaboration on Open Educational Resources (OER)

Open Educational Resources (OER) reduce entry barriers towards educational resources and avoid redundant work when educational resources of high quality are created in different organizations. Adoption of OER faces known challenges, and the ALMS framework provides evaluation criteria for the re-use of OER. This project extends the ALMS framework, provides an infrastructure for the creation of and collaboration on OER, and publishes OER. The infrastructure rests upon a newly developed Free/Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS), called emacs-reveal for the generation of HTML presentations with embedded audio explanations, which are suitable for self-study. The generation of HTML from simple text files (in org mode) takes place in a public GitLab infrastructure, increasing the software’s ease of use. OER are created and improved continuously, since April 2017 in particular for a lecture on Operating Systems. Besides, the infrastructure itself is documented via OER.

Muli – The Münster Logic-Imperative Language

Object-oriented programming languages prevail in the development of enterprise software, but they do not particularly support the implementation of software which includes solving complicated search problems with dynamically appearing constraints. We propose the constraint-logic object-oriented language Muli. It facilitates an integrated implementation of business applications that involve search. Muli extends Java by logic variables and encapsulated search and leverages a symbolic virtual machine and constraint solvers.
