WI FAQ (Master)

A - Application and Admission

  • Is there a special application procedure for non-EU citizens?

Not anymore. the application deadlines are the same for everyone:

May 10 - July 15 for winter term

November 10 - January 15 for the summer term

    Required documents are the same.

  • Why do I have to send a course description?

Fundamental knowledge of the methods from Business Administration, Computer Science, Quantitative Methods, and Information Systems is a prerequisite for studying in the MSc in Information Systems programme. In order to evaluate this knowledge, the descriptions of previously taken courses are required.

  • Do I have to send original certificates?

No, but your if your certificates are in other languages than German or English, translations to English or German have to be authenticated by a notary, an embassy or another official institution.

  • Why is there no application form available?

The application is held online. A link to the online application portal is available once the application period has started. Until then no application is possible.

  • Do I have to apply online or in paper?

You have to use our online application system and upload all required documents there.

  • What is the Course Description?

As mentioned on our website under "Application", this is a document that describes all (relevant) modules of your previous studies, i.e., your Bachelor programme. It does not have to be an official document from your university. Instead you might want to use our template.

When creating the course description on your own, please make sure that it fulfills the following requirements:

    • it contains (at least) four sections, i.e., one per study / research area (Information Systems, Computer Science, Quantitative Methods and Business Administration)
    • each of your modules should be assigned to one of those sections
    • if a module is not relevant to any of those four areas, you do not have to explicitly list it (we see that you studied it by looking at your transcript of records)
    • list the content for each module (similar to a syllabus)
    • add your grade and the work load (ECTS or similar) per module

  • Am I considered to be a student from the EU?

You are considered being a student from the European Union (EU), if you fulfill at least one of the following points:

    (1) you received your university entrance certificate, i.e., a high school diploma or equivalent, in Germany

    (2) you already received a Bachelors degree in Germany

    (3) you are a citizen of a country of the EU.

  • I am still waiting for some documents. Is it possible to send parts of the application after the deadline?

Our deadlines are strict. All documents, including the language requirements, have to be present by the end of the deadline.

  • How much are the tuition fees?

The tuition fees for the winter term 2015 are 238.81 Euro. Those fees are for the entire semester and they are identical for all of our students, i.e., there is no difference in the fees between students from within or outside the EU. Also, those fees include the fees for the Semesterticket, which allows you to use (almost all) public transportation within the federal state North Rhine-Westphalia. This state obviously includes Münster itself, but it also contains a lot of other big cities in the near environment, such as Dortmund, Essen, Düsseldorf, Cologne, etc.

The fees usually increase slightly per term (usually by approx. 5 - 10 Euro per semester).

  • I have a Bachelor degree in a related subject (Information Systems, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Business Administration, Statistics, etc.). Am I eligible?

If you are eligible can only be decided by our admission committee. You have to provide knowledge in all four required areas (Information Systems, Computer Science, Quantitative Methods and Business Administration). You can only get a definite result by applying.

  • When will I be notified, whether my application was accepted or rejected?

Usually, you will receive a response at the beginning of February (when applying for the summer term) or beginning of August (when applying for the winter term). This gives you approximately 6-8 weeks for handling your visa issues, finding an accomodation and preparing your studies.

  • Is there a minimum amount of credits or grades per subject?

We require an average final grade (CGPA) of 2,9 or better according to the German grading system.

Eligible applicants have completed courses worth at minimum 72 credits (ECTS) in the subject areas  (Information Systems, Computer Science, Quantitative Methods and Business Administration). At least 24 of those credits are related to the chosen Major subject.

  • Do I need a GRE?

No, there is no need for a GRE, when you want to apply for our program.

  • My entire studies were in English. Do I still need to provide a TOEFL or IELTS?

If a student studied in English (the medium of instruction was English), but in a non-English speaking country, he / she would still need to obtain another proof of language proficiency.

Given that information, you should be able to find out yourself, whether you need a certificate that proves your proficiency in English, e.g. an IELTS or TOEFL.

Once again (since we still receive this question very often):
In case you've studied in a non-English speaking country, it is not sufficient to provide a certificate, which states that your "medium of instruction was English".
