Topic: Towards more sophisticated analysis of business process efficiency analysis and its drivers

Abstract:

Even though Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is a well-established method for efficiency measurement in an economics context, applications of this method on a business process level are rare to find yet. Even less developed in this context is the application of existing methods or the development of new methods to identify and analyze the determinants of the efficiency measured with DEA in the first stage. This paper compares those methods combined with DEA, which are often used in economics, for their applicability to a business process level. This comparison is based on an application of these method combinations to the securities settlement and clearing process of a large German bank. The results not only show how the methods have to be adjusted in order to deliver interpretable results for business process efficiency analysis, but also point out the strength and weaknesses of each method combination for identifying drivers of (in-)efficiency in business processes.
