Application Concept and Prototypical Implementation of Artemis for Informatics I
Note: This thesis is a technical and educational technology topic intended for students with an interest in software development and digital teaching.
Initial Situation:
Teaching introductory programming courses to large groups of students requires scalable approaches for providing exercises, feedback, and assessment. In the course Informatics I, programming exercises are an essential component for enabling students to apply and deepen the concepts introduced in lectures and tutorials.
Artemis is an open-source learning platform developed for interactive learning and automated feedback. Among other features, it supports programming exercises, automated testing and assessment, and individual feedback to students.
However, adopting such a system requires more than its technical deployment. An application concept is needed that specifies how Artemis can be meaningfully integrated into the existing teaching and exercise structure of Informatics I and which technical and organizational adaptations are required.
Goal:
The general research goal of this topic is to develop, prototype, and evaluate an application concept for using Artemis in the course Informatics I.
The thesis should investigate how existing programming exercises and teaching processes can be mapped to Artemis, implement a representative prototype, and evaluate its suitability for practical use in the course.
Research Questions:
-
Which requirements arise from using Artemis in the context of Informatics I?
-
How can existing exercises and teaching processes be represented and implemented using Artemis?
-
Which technical, organizational, and didactical benefits and limitations arise from the proposed approach?
-
To what extent is the developed prototype suitable for practical use in Informatics I?
Necessary tasks involve:
-
Understanding the current structure, exercises, and assessment processes of Informatics I.
-
Analyzing the relevant concepts and functionality of Artemis.
-
Developing an application and integration concept for the use of Artemis in Informatics I.
-
Prototypically implementing selected exercises and relevant workflows in Artemis.
-
Evaluating the developed concept and prototype based on suitable criteria and deriving recommendations for future use.
