AI and Attention in the Organization – A Topic-oriented Literature Review Seminar

This course offers four slots for incoming BA students. Please be aware that it requires early involvement!

AI is significantly transforming the work environment for both businesses and their employees. In this seminar, we, that is, you, will explore this phenomenon by analyzing a variety of sub-topics through structured literature reviews. The learning objectives of this seminar are twofold: First, you’ll gain  insights into AI attention mechanisms and their impact on attention within organizations—knowledge that will be increasingly crucial in the coming years. Second, you’ll receive comprehensive training in selected literature review methods, which could be beneficial for your bachelor’s thesis. Seminar papers will be co-authored by pairs of students, providing you with experience in collaborative research methods.

The seminar will be led by our ERCIS partner, Professor Isabel Ramos, who is an Information Systems professor at the University of Minho, Portugal. Consequently, the seminar will be conducted in English.

Seminar Organization (tentative dates)

Tentative Seminar Content and Schedule:

  • Teams of two will write a seminar paper about a specific topic related to the main topic, AI and Attention.
  • The seminar will begin with a virtual kick-off shortly after the seminars are distributed. During this session, the seminar theme will be explained in more detail, essential tools will be introduced, and teams will be formed.
  • By early April, teams are expected to have familiarized themselves with their topics.
  • In an initial meeting at the beginning of April, teams will present their preliminary understanding of their assigned topics. Professor Ramos will provide a deeper introduction to literature review methods.
  • During bi-weekly on-site meetings, your progress will be assessed, and support will be offered, if any challenges arise.
  • The final presentation will take place at the end of May.
  • Approximately one week later, you will need to submit the final paper, incorporating any feedback you may have received during the final presentation.
  • Best submissions might be considered to be published in a book.

We expect co-authors to complete an author contribution statement at the end of the seminar.

Questions (<- implies using English)

  • Will the first on-site meeting in April be after the start of the lectures of the semester (after 13.04.) or earlier?
    • It will be after April 13th because I will arrive in Muenster on April 19th (Sunday). So it will be on the next week. I am not yet sure on which day.
  • When will the interim presentation take place? And how deep do we have to be in the literature for that?
    • I will be in Muenster for 6 weeks. My present is that every week (but the first), the groups (2 members) show their progress. It is not the extent of the work, is the persistence in progressing a little bit more so the groups can have questions for me and I can give feedback so they keep on track for the time I’ll be there
