Eine kritische Betrachtung der Informationssystemforschung für Nachhaltigkeit

This paper critically examines the Information Systems (IS) research with the focus on sustainability. In an era of rapid technological advancements, it highlights the urgent need to rethink IS's capacity to meet the complex sustainability challenges. Despite aiming at a holistic perspective on sustainability, the IS research continues to assume a technology-centric view, putting emphasis upon evaluating the benefits and drawbacks of specific digital technologies instead of evaluating digital technologies contributions in regard to the broad spectrum of sustainability challenges. To advocate for a more problem-centric approach in IS research on sustainability, this study revisits extant IS research on sustainability of the last decade, pushing to acknowledge both the advantageous and adverse effects of digital technologies on sustainability, alongside areas where these might not directly contribute to sustainability challenges at all. This paper provides new insights and directions for leveraging digital technologies to address global sustainability issues, by balancing the assessment of their effectiveness considering prioritized sustainability challenges.
