Course content
Logistics often is defined as having the right item in the right quantity at the right time at the right place for the right price in the right condition to the right customer. Logistics incorporates all industry sectors and is of high importance for every company producing and selling goods. While logistics is having a focus onto the operative processes, supply chain managements deals with the design, planning, execution, control, and monitoring of supply chains across several organizations, thus having a broader view than logistics.
The course investigates traditional logistics within the context of the supply chain. Topics covered by the course are:
• Main definition of logistics
• Evolution of logistics
• Performance management systems
• Primary logistics activities
• Logistics within supply chain management
• Logistics in emerging countries
• Trends in logistics
The reference textbook is ”Supply Chain Logistics Management, Donald J. Bowersox, David J. Closs, and M. Bixbt Cooper, McGrawHill ISBN 0-07-235100-4 , 2002”.
Registration
This lecture/exercise is limited to a maximum of 30 participants. In addition to the regular application at the Prüfungsamt/examination office, you need to register directly at the chair.

Please note: With a registration, you only applied for a spot / you mandatorily indicated your interest for a spot! If more than 30 students register for the course, there will be a lottery. This implies that there will be no following of any rules such as first-come-first-serve or similar!
Course Structure:
The course will be structured in two phases. First, within a pre-assignment, students will have to do some readings before the lectures will start, commencing the second phase. Within the lecturing phase, a presentation of the insights gained from the readings by the students is foreseen. Additionally, work on a case study will be carried out.
The pre-assignment (reading) phase is planned to start with a kick-off meeting in October (will be announced later). During this meeting, the students will get all relevant information. The lectures/group work will take place in January.
Pre-assignment Phase: A list of the pre-assignment readings will be provided and the topics will be assigned at kick-off meeting. Readings are to be done before the beginning of the classes.
- Each of the topics will be assigned to different student groups. Students will get their assigned topic after the kick-off meeting and are expected to read and analyze the two papers of their respective topic before the beginning of the classes. Students sharing the same topics have the possibility to ask questions and discuss the papers on day 1 of the lecturing phase and to present their analysis on day 2 (topics 1 to 4) and day 3 (topics 5 to 8).
- Students should read and analyze the papers regarding the Volkswagen case study. It is expected that students will be able to discuss the content of these papers during the practice/group works on day 4. The case study´s guideline will be given on day 4.
Lecturing Phase: Classes will take four consecutive days. They will take place every day from 09:00 am until 5:00 pm. Classes will have a mixture of lecturing and practice/group work to get the content of the lecture. Lectures will be during the morning and group discussions and presentations based on the pre-assignment readings will be during the afternoons. Classes will take four consecutive days in January 2025.
